Then, after earning the position of International Master by FIDE in 1997, she won the title of Japan Women’s Championship another three times in the coming years.

In contrast, her husband was a chess prodigy. At the age of 14, he won the U.S Championship and became the youngest ever US Champion. Then, at the age of 15 years, 6 months, 1 day, he was qualified for the youngest ever grandmaster.

Miyoko and Bobby Were Married for Four Years

In 1973, Watai met with the famed world chess champion, Bobby Fischer. At the time, Watai acted as a tour guide of Fischer.

They became good friends and she used to visit him several times for around three decades in the USA. Eventually, their relationship started getting intimate.

Then, in 2000, Bobby visited Japan and they lived together in a de facto marriage in her home. The couple wanted to be legally married, however, he could not do so until 2004 when he legally married her from prison.

After Bobby’s detention in July 2004 for trying to travel from a revoked US passport, Miyoko supported the great chess player’s release.

Similarly, as per the attorney who represented a competing claim for Fischer’s estate, the Supreme Court of Iceland ruled that Watai’s marriage claim to Fischer was void thanks to her failure to present the original copies of their alleged official marriage certificate.

In early March 2011, an Iceland district court reported that Miyoko was the late Fischer’s widow and heir and was entitled to get his estate and many more. Furthermore, it was ruled that the pair had been legally married on 6 September 2004. Nonetheless, the duo has not disclosed much information about her children.
