Tomica faced the task of maintaining the label on top, avoiding lawsuits from others who wanted a piece of the company, and convincing artists and industry officials that she possessed the great success to supervise the successful label as a relatively unknown entity.

Her inheritance proved to be a baptism by fire, but within two years of operating Ruthless Records, she had rebuilt the business, found a stronger distribution contract, extended the firm’s artist roster, and introduced fresh talent to broaden the type of music the label supported.

The businesswoman produced films such as Straight Outta Compton, which was critically acclaimed and was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Original Screenplay, as well as awards from the African-American Film Critics Association, Alliance of Women Film Journalists, American Film Institute, and others.

Woods filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against her stepson, Eric Darnell Wright. Wright and his accomplice, she claimed, founded a firm named NWA LLC and tried the infringement.
